Sleep plays a vital role in the physical, emotional, and cognitive development of students and affects their overall health and well-being. Teachers and staff who are informed about the benefits of sleep and understand the negative effects of sleep deprivation can help to create a culture that values healthy sleep behavior. By educating teachers and staff, schools can ensure that they are equipped to support students in developing healthy sleep habits and promoting a positive sleep environment at home.
Tip 1
After noticing that many students work until late in the evening, or even at night, to finish projects and reports, we as teachers agreed on setting deadlines in the afternoon (17:00) instead of midnight (0:00). This way students are less likely to stay up late and mess up their sleeping schedule because of school work.
Tip 2
- As coach or teacher, read up on the topic of how electronics affect sleep (https://www.sleepfoundation.org/how-sleep-works/how-electronics-affect-sleep ).
- Discuss the points addressed in the article with students. At the end of the conversation or discussion, let them formulate one achievable (small) goal for themselves which they are going to try out this week. Reflect on the results or the outcome a week later.
